With pleasure we announce, that the Scientific Bulletins of ESCORENA (European System of Cooperative Research Networks in Agriculture) are available at the website of the University of “Aurel Vlaicu”, Arad, Romania (www.uav.ro) within Journals.
Thanks to Romanian Government, Prof. Dr. Lizica Mihut – the Rector of the this University and assistant Professor Cecilia Sirghie of this University – the Deputy Coordinator of the European Cooperative Research Network on Flax and other Bast Plants, the opportunity to print the Scientific Bulletin of ESCORENA was possible. The financial support derived from the project: POS-CCE 210/2010: Acronim „BASTEURES”: “Bast Plants- Strategic Resources for European Economy”, led by the “Aurel Vlaicu” (see the announcement below).

Projects connected with the ESCORENA Network’s topics and with ESCORENA Focal Point.
The ESCORENA Focal Point is involved in the activities of the project BASTEURES: “Bast Plants - Renewable Strategic Resources for European Economy” (2010 - 2013); co-funded by EUROPEAN UNION and Romanian Government through the European Regional Development Fund. Sectoral Operational Programme “Increase of Economic Competitiveness. Investing for your future”.

Project Beneficiary:
Aurel Vlaicu University - Arad, Romania.
Project’s Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Ryszard Michal Kozlowski - the Coordinator of the ESCORENA Focal Point
(at the Institute of Natural Fibres & Medicinal Plants in Poznan, Poland).

The main project’s work packages:
I. Textile and non-textile advanced materials;
II. Functional food and auxiliaries for pharmaceutics and cosmetics by including agrofine- chemicals;
III. Reusage of all wastes (soil and liquid) that come from the complex transformation of bast plants.

The main objective of the project is the complete capitalization of the bast plants (flax, hemp, Spanish junceum) in order to obtain advanced materials, auxiliary raw materials and products for energy by developing and applying new and competitive processing/extraction technologies for both, primary and secondary products of these plants, in a sustainable economical development context.

FAO Regional Round Table on Problems of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAP)
Budapest, Hungary

The FAO Regional Office for Europe proposed the creation of the Network on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and inclusion into the family of ESCORENA – European System of Cooperative Research Networks in Agriculture.
The coordinator Professor Bertalan Galambosi, senior scientist at MTT Agrifood Research, Mikkeli, Finland has already started the recruitment into this new organization before the meeting at FAO.

The idea of enlarging the team of ESCORENA by MAP Network has been approved by the ESCORENA Focal Point Coordinator - Prof. Dr. Ryszard M. Kozlowski. The staff of FAO, members of ESCORENA and of the MAP Network are discussing the problems related to sustainability of herbal and medicinal plant cultivation, production, processing, as well as future prospects.

The FAO/ESCORENA Network on Buffalo is involved in the organization of  VI Buffalo Symposium of Americas and V Buffalo Symposium of Europe and Americas to be held in Havana, Cuba on 21 -26 November 2011.

1st Announcement AGROPINE2011 International Meeting on Mediterranean Stone Pine for Agroforestry
Valladolid, Spain.

The International Meeting on Stone Pine, will be held in Valladolid (Spain), in the frame of the NUT Network of FAO-CIHEAM.
Main emphasis is placed on Mediterranean stone pine, but eventual contributions relating to other pines with edible seeds from other geographic areas are also welcome. All oral sessions will be plenary sessions held in English.

The meeting will be structured by the following general themes:
- Genetic improvement, selection and breeding in Mediterranean stone pine,
- Management of stone pine for cone production in forests and agroforestry,
- Pine nut industry and markets,
- Modelling growth and production.

Regional Workshop on the "Development of Thematic Knowledge Networks" in the framework of "Coherence in Information for Agricultural Research for Development" (CIARD)

The workshop will carry on the capacity and network building traditions of similar events of previous years by demonstrating new demands and challenges
in knowledge sharing and seeking most suitable and up-to-date managerial and technological solutions. The workshop brings together thematic network coordinators, content owners and ICT experts in order to discuss state of the art and practice solutions, standards and communication channels of knowledge management. FAO initiatives and ongoing programs with regard to agricultural information management will also be covered. The workshop will introduce the use of open source content management tools and open ended standards.
